This Swift Tern was flying low over Rondebosch, flying north, with a fish in its bill. Swift Terns are breeding on Robben Island. So the fish would be for its chick. The bird must have caught the fish in False Bay, the nearest sea in the direction from which it was flying. From False Bay to Robben Island is about 40 km, and the fish had travelled 20 km by the time it reached Rondebosch. No wonder it is looking a bit shrivelled. |
