This one of the largest antlions, sometimes attaining a wingspan of 16 cm. It is fairly common and widespread in the drier western areas of SA, being concentrated in the Northern and Western Cape Provinces. It extends into Namibia and Angola. The large red and black larvae live freely in sand, and have even been known to attack geckos and, in one case a small adder, but they are unable to feed on these reptiles and usually die as a result of not being able to extract their jaws from the vertebrate prey. |
