There are two species in these photos. On the left Myrmeleon alcestris, on the right an undescribed species of Creoleon. M. alcestris is a very characteristic Myrmeleon owing to the black markings in the wings. It is widespread in SA, present in all provinces, and extends into Mozambique, Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe.It occurs in a wide variety of habitats. The larvae are typical pit builders. The Creoleon is widespread in the drier regions of SA, and nothing is known about its biology. |
