This is one of the thread-winged lacewings, subfamily Crocinae of the family Nemopteridae. These insects live under rock overhangs and small caves, but are also attracted by light. The adults have an elaborate mating ritual, and are one of the few insects that can fly in very confined spaces with the body held vertically. The bizarre long-necked larvae live in dust and detritus in small caves and under sheltered rock overhangs. They require habitats that are sheltered from sun and wind. Because of the very specialized micro-habitats in which they live, they are capable of inhabiting very arid and inhospitable places. The species is widespread in the Western and Northern Cape provinces of SA, and extends into Namibia. |
