Lepimap is a citizen science project which aims to determine the distribution and conservation priorities of butterflies and moths on the African continent. LepiMAP is building the 21st century distribution maps for Africa's butterflies and moths.

LepiMAP is a joint project of the Animal Demography Unit (Department of Biological Sciences, University of Cape Town) and Lepsoc, The Lepidopterists' Society of Africa. It is the continuation of SABCA, the Southern African Butterfly Conservation Assessment.

2) DATASET METADATA
Title of dataset Southern African Butterfly Conservation Assessment (SABCA)
Brief description (max. 200 words) The Southern African Butterfly Conservation Assessment (SABCA) is a four year project, launched in 2007. It is a partnership between the South African National Biodiversity Institute, the Lepidopterists? Society of Africa and the Animal Demography Unit (University of Cape Town). SABCA will compile a comprehensive database of records from museum and private collections, field surveys and its virtual museum. About 500?000 records are in existing collections. Field surveys are being conducted around South Africa and prioritised to gaps. SABCA?s online virtual museum is aimed at raising public awareness for butterfly biodiversity.
Purpose (max. 200 words) To determining the distribution and diversity of butterflies in the atlas region (South Africa, Lesotho and Swaziland). Species assessments according to the IUCN criteria will be conducted based on this data. An updated butterfly Red Data Book and Atlas will be produced, with distribution maps for each species at a quarter degree grid square scale.
Begin date (When data collection started) 01/04/2007
End date for static datasets (When was data collection ended) 31/03/2011
3) DATA QUALITY
Give a brief account of any biases, gaps or errors which may exist in the dataset. Most of the older data has had to be geo-ereferenced to degrees and minutes, based on the locality description, thus actual points of observation are unknown for these. Maps can only be at the quarter degree grid scale to be able to incorporate all data. Some locality descriptions not detailed enough to geo-reference. Most IDs in museum collections are assumed to be correct, some have been checked by Lepidopterists' (e.g. Transvaal, Albany, Natal, durban Natural Science Museums). Otherwise taxonomy is updated by Graham Henning of LepSoc based on locality descriptions and not on viewing the specimen. Many gaps in the atlas region, especially Northern Cape, North West, Free State, Lesotho and Swaziland. Field surveys are not standarised and no measure of effort can be made. Photos submitted to the virtual museum are biased to butterflies which are easy to photograph and to areas which are most accessible to the public.
4) ACCESS/USE CONSTRAINTS
How to get a copy of the dataset Data summaries and distributions maps are available in the project's website. For raw data requests email the contact person.
5) OTHER INFORMATION
Other information about the dataset which may be important. At the end of SABCa SANBI will be placing a copy of the SABCa database onto their data portal for public access, following their data sensitivity policy and with acknowledgtements to data owners.
