Alf RE-ID: believe it to be a Melampias huebneri. I have for
sometime realized that this is either a butterfly that varies from locality
to locality or that we have a complex here either made or in the making. We
know for example that it has been found at Sutherland . More recently I
have specimens from the Middelpos area . These do not look too different
from the specimen in question. Ie possibly a cline with more red on the
upperside especially on the females. The further north one goes the behavior
changes in that the populations are much smaller and confined. It is not
inconceivable that a population still exists on the Camdeboo Mountains. This
is a marvelous extension to its range if my ID is accurate. I am reminded
here of the isolated population of C. camdeboo which cannot be more than 10
or so kilometers ( as the crow flies )from where this specimen was taken if
I know Doug Kroon.
