The adults of Pseudoclimaciella mimic wasps and sometimes even resemble wasps in flight. The larval stages undergo a hypermetamorphosis where the first instar is an active triungulin larva that actively seeks out a spider host – often a Palystes. The triungulin is then transported back to the spider’s nest where it feeds on the eggs and spiderlings and undergoes a moult into a grub-like larva. Once the nest is empty of prey the larva pupates. A very complicated larval stage that is also manifest in certain Coleoptera (Meloidae). |
