This is a teneral (freshly emerged from cocoon) of a Myrmeleon, possibly Myrmeleon obscurus. M obscurus is a common and widespread antlion that occurs over most of southern and eastern Africa. Also Indian Ocean islands – Mauritius and Madagascar. It is a pit builder and its pits are the most frequently encountered of all Myrmeleon species and occur in a variety of situations – even city pavements where there are sand pockets. |
