ReptileMAP:   7719

Country:   Botswana
Locus:   1922BD
Observer:   Kennedy David; Photos by Dave Kennedy, Sam Kennedy
Date of record:   2012-04-20
Number of photos:   2
Notes:   This snake swam at considerable speed across the channel in front us, and vanished into the marginal vegetation. The sighting was only seconds long, because of the speed at which the snake was moving, and the only photograph a click-and-hope effort which did manage to catch the snake moving from left to right through the reeds and sedges. Our first reaction was mamba, because of a)speed, b) colour, a grey-buff-olive colour with no obvious markings and c) size, for this was a long snake, estimated at >2m in the water. On cropping the photo to enlarge the head end of the snake (second picture), the mouth can clearly be seen passing far behind the eye, which would support the mamba ID. We cannot be positive, however, and would appreciate an ID or constructive comment about this snake. Thank you.

Comment:   The head is visible in the second photo and I trust this is a black mamba.
