Colour and pattern does not seem typical. This specimen was seen on large rocks bordering exposed bedrock.
It would be interesting to see more individuals from this location. |

I agree that this doesn't look like a typical L. c. capensis, but neither does it look like L. nigropunctatus (the other species supposed to occur in that area). The pale orange spots at the base of the tail recalls a L. bradfieldi, but that is far out of range. |

The fact that Psammobates oculifer has been recorded in Sekhukhune suggests that at some point arid western tropical species were able to penetrate eastward almost as far as the Escarpment. That would make it entirely possible for a relict population of L. bradfieldi to persist in the area. I am still not convinced that it is L. bradfieldi, but it wouldn't be too surprising either. |
