The elephant is standing by a classic forest patch, which has developed round an old termite mound. Defecating birds perching on the mound would have dropped seeds, initiating tree growth. Animals seeking shelter from the sun would have sought shade in the developing forest patch, their droppings enriching the soil and encouraging more growth. Many Delta islands begin this way and then expand through aggregation brought about by growth and vegetative silt trapping. Note the fine Jackalberry Diospyros mespiliformis on the mound. |
