This species occurs fairly widely in South Africa from the Eastern Cape (Grahamstown area) northwards, often occurring in high altitude grassland - fairly common in the grasslands of the "Little berg" of the Drakensberg. It is replaced in the south and the Fynbos biome by its sister-species, P. speciosus. The large black larvae live in soil among grass tussocks. It seems to be confined to southern Africa, not extending beyond Zimbabwe. |
