The genus includes the largest of the species of Mantispidae. This one is probably P. tropica, but not sure. The adults mimic wasps and sometimes even resemble wasps in flight. The larval stages undergo a hypermetamorphosis where the first instar is an active triungulin larva that actively seeks out a spider host – often a Palystes. The triungulin is then transported back to the spider’s nest where it feeds on the eggs and spiderlings and undergoes a moult into a grub-like larva. Once the nest is empty of prey the larva pupates. A very complicated larval stage that is also manifest in certain Coleoptera (Meloidae). |
