Comment:   This is the pit of a larva of a Myrmeleon or Cueta species. Myrmeleon is the most widespread of all antlion genera and is represented on all continents. Pits are frequently encountered, mostly in sheltered situation, but frequently in the open. The pits of Cueta species are always encountered in the open, never sheltered, and they are able to endure very high temperatures, but can retreat to a vertical shaft, constructed below the pit to escape extreme heat.
