   [ Record 7 of 4110 ]
LepiMAP:   734
Province:   Western Cape
Country:   South Africa
Locus:   3418AB
Observer:   Johnson J.
Date of record:   2007-12-00
Number of photos:   2
Notes:   may be larvae for record number 649. The caterpillar was found on a mulberry tree in my garden but there was no real evidence that it was actually feeding. I think it was in the final instar stage and ready to pupate. However, my neighbour has a large syringa which overhangs my garden only a few meters from the mulberry so perhaps it came from there. The butterfly emerged about 2/3 weeks after these caterpillar photographs were taken and was within a meter of the mulberry when found.

Comment:   The larva does look very much like a C.brutus (white-barred emperor) larva but none of the plants mentioned are known foodplants. The Charaxes (emperors) are known to eat leaves from peach trees to exotic waterberries so I'd bet my money on C.brutus
