Country:   South Africa

Date of record:   1978-03-12
Number of photos:   0
Notes:   the butterfly was scarce, about 5 specimens were seen on that afternoon. It is now presumed to be extinct, but may still occur in the same place on Lion's Head as well as on the slopes of the Twelve Apostles above oude Kraal and on the slopes of Little Lion's Head above Llandudno and above Sandy Bay. The butterfly usually rests with its wings closed and blends in very well with its surroundings (bare patches of gravelly ground among low vegetation). It may also be found feeding on flowers such as vygies A butterfly really worth while looking for during its short flight period from the beginning of Febtuary until perhaps the last week of March. No other butterfly in the Cape Peninsula has the underside markins of this butterly, commonly known as Lion's Head Copper. The upperside is coppery, and the butterfly may therefore be confused with other so called coppers flying with it in the same areas.
